Control Burn on Farmville Lake Road
Sat. Oct 29th 2011

Occasionally on Hampden-Sydney Fire, we are requested for things out of the usual scope of practice for a fire department. On October 29th, 2011, We were requested to standby to control demolition of a single story residential structure. The owner of the structure contacted us ahead of time to request our presence. In the week prior to demolition, crews worked to strip the house of any valuable, usable or dangerous materials. The day before, we used the structure for non-fire training, such as forcible entry, ventilation and self-rescue. It came at a good time, as we have 21 new firefighters. The day of the burn, we went over the Incident Command structure on the fire ground. A brief explanation of different positions on the fire ground, such as Incident Commander, Safety Officer, Crew Leaders and Crews. We also did training to show fire behavior and reading fire and smoke. We invited and trained with Darlington Heights Vol. Fire Department during the day of the burn. It proves beneficial to the homeowner, due to the rising cost of having professional demolition crew come out and tear the house down. We do accept donations for our time spent on scene. On a good note, after completion of the burn, Firefighter Chris Pedraja managed to rescue a Black Snake that had been in the basement throughout the burn.
